What is Sodium Hyaluronate?
Sodium hyaluronate (sometimes called Hyaluronic Acid or HA) is a long-chain polymeric macro-molecule that is highly viscous. Sodium hyaluronate is naturally present in the eye’s tear film and in the body’s joints. Many new generation eye drops contain sodium hyaluronate, providing enhanced comfort for patients experiencing the symptoms of dry eye. Much of its success in artificial tear formulations is based around sodium hyaluronate demonstrating so-called non-Newtonian behaviour, in that, just like the tear film itself, it becomes less viscous during the blink with viscosity increasing when the eye is open.

How does it work?
The sodium hyaluronate is incorporated into the matrix of the lens in a gel form to create the world’s first hyaluronate gel. When the lens is worn the combined action of body heating and the shear force from blinking, releases the sodium hyaluronate into the pre and post lens tear film, providing enhanced comfort to the wearer throughout the day.

What is the Dk/t of the Safegel 1-day?
An optimum combination of an extremely thin lens design and 60% water content material means an impressively high Dk/t of 40(at 30ºC), at the centre of a -3.00. This high level of oxygen transmissibility is also better maintained during the day. Unlike conventional hydrogel materials, the water retaining properties of the hyaluronate gel help maintain hydration reducing lens dehydration. This helps prevent a drop in transmissibility seen with some other daily disposable lenses by the end of the day.
